Every custom piece starts as an idea and becomes reality through our process

Custom jewelry design is what separates your brand from everyone else selling the same mass-produced pieces. When you work with a manufacturer to create exclusive designs, you own something unique that your competitors cannot copy. But the custom design process can feel intimidating if you have never done it before.

This guide explains how custom jewelry design works from initial concept to final production, so you know exactly what to expect at each stage.

Stage 1: Concept and Briefing

Everything starts with your idea. This could be a rough sketch on paper, a Pinterest board of inspiration images, a competitor piece you want to improve on, or a detailed CAD file from your designer. The more information you provide, the faster the process moves.

A good manufacturer will ask you about target price point, materials, stone preferences, sizing requirements, and intended market. These details shape the design decisions that follow.

Stage 2: CAD Design and 3D Rendering

Your concept gets translated into a precise 3D model using CAD software. This digital model shows exact dimensions, stone placements, and proportions. You can view it from every angle and request modifications before any physical work begins.

Most manufacturers offer 2-3 rounds of CAD revisions included in the design fee. This is where you fine-tune details like prong size, band width, stone spacing, and overall proportions.

Stage 3: Sample Production

Once the CAD is approved, a physical sample is produced. This is usually made in the actual material (silver or gold) so you can evaluate weight, comfort, and appearance in real life. Some manufacturers offer wax or brass samples first to save cost on the initial prototype.

Sample production typically takes 7-14 days depending on complexity. This is your chance to make final adjustments before committing to bulk production.

Stage 4: Approval and Bulk Production

After you approve the sample, bulk production begins. Lead times depend on quantity and complexity but typically range from 2-4 weeks for silver jewelry and 3-5 weeks for gold pieces. During production, the manufacturer should send progress updates and photos.

What Does Custom Design Cost?

Typical costs for custom jewelry design:

  • CAD design fee – $30 to $100 per design (often waived if you place a bulk order)
  • Sample cost – Actual material cost plus labor. $20-50 for silver, $150-500 for gold.
  • Mold/die charge – $20-50 per design for the production mold (one-time cost)

Many manufacturers, including us, waive the design and mold fees when you place a production order above a certain quantity. It is their way of investing in a long-term relationship.
